Sarah was born in 1834 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Sarah's father was Robert Douglas Young and her mother was Sarah McCarty. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Young and Phebe Douglas; her maternal grandparents were William McCarty and Rachel Kyle. She had nine brothers and three sisters, named Arthur, James Harvey, Clinton, William, Douglas, John, McCarty, Luther, Joseph, Leah, Margaret and Phebe. She had two half-brothers, and also a half-sibling of unknown gender named Robert Douglas, Porter and Young.-
