William R. was born on January 6th, 1855 in Rogersville, Hawkins, Tennessee.1 William R.'s father was Robert D. Self and his mother was Judith Roarke. His paternal grandparents were Jesse Self and Agnes Dobson. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas B., Josiah Franklin, Michael V., John Rufus, Sarah M., Nancy J., Martha A. and Cynthia M.. He was the youngest of the nine children.-
