Katherine was born in 1847 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Katherine's father was William Pitt Phipps and her mother was Catherine Ann Hale. Her paternal grandparents were William Phipps and Sarah Erwin; her maternal grandparents were Philip Smith Hale and Elizabeth Bachman. She had a brother and a sister, named William Fletcher and Matilda. She was the second oldest of the three children.-
