Mary was born in 1828 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Mary's father was Richard Henderson Mitchell and her mother was Louisiana N. Rogers. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Mitchell and Elizabeth Saunders; her maternal grandparents were Joseph Rogers and Mary Amis. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Stokely D., Joseph, Frederick Egbert, Frances and Lucy A.. She was the oldest of the six children.-
