His paternal grandparents were Richard Mitchell and Elizabeth Saunders; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Rogers and Mary Amis. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Stokely D., Joseph, Mary, Frances and Lucy A.. He was the third youngest of the six children.-
