Joseph was born in 1834 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Joseph's father was Richard Henderson Mitchell and his mother was Louisiana N. Rogers. His paternal grandparents were Richard Mitchell and Elizabeth Saunders; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Rogers and Mary Amis. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Stokely D., Frederick Egbert, Mary, Frances and Lucy A.. He was the third oldest of the six children.-
