Ruth Jane was born in 1831 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Ruth Jane's father was John McLain and her mother was Elizabeth Starnes. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas McLain and Elizabeth Doty; her maternal grandparents were Leonard Starnes and Barbara Bowman. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Elliot, Leonard Mitchell, Thomas H., Shadrack D., John B., Nancy Ann and Mary Caroline. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.-
