Mary Caroline was born in 1842 in Of, Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Mary Caroline's father was John McLain and her mother was Elizabeth Starnes. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas McLain and Elizabeth Doty; her maternal grandparents were Leonard Starnes and Barbara Bowman. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Elliot, Leonard Mitchell, Thomas H., Shadrack D., John B., Nancy Ann and Ruth Jane. She was the second youngest of the eight children.-
