His paternal grandparents were James McCarty and Sarah Fugate; his maternal grandparents were Robert Kyle and Leah Brooks. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Robert Kyle, James P., William L., Andrew R., Absalom P., Thomas Jefferson, Elizabeth, Mary, Leah, Martha, Sarah and Rachel B.. He was the second youngest of the thirteen children.-
