Sarah was born in 1835 in Tennessee.1 Sarah's father was Michael Massengill and her mother was Hannah Torbett. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Massengill and Penelope Cobb. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Joseph Torbett, William Allen, William, Lucretia S., Lucinda Evaline and Susan S.. She had a half-brother and five half-sisters, named Richard Henry, Penelope Louise, Massengill, Rebecca Cobb, Massengill and Barsheba Stuart.-
