James' father was Robert Jossey and his mother was Mary Pitman. His paternal grandparents were James Jossey and Margaret Or Peggy Whitaker; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Pitman and Mary Lane. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Cary, Henry, John W., Robert M., Samuel, Rebecca, Elizabeth and Harriet.-
