Mary was born in 1870 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Mary's father was Joseph Cobb and her mother was Susan Pilant. Her maternal grandparents were John Pilant and Mahala. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Andrew, William G., James, John, Eliza D., Martha, Serena and Nancy. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.-
