Susan was born in 1838 in ,Hawkins, Tennessee.1 Susan's father was John Pilant and her mother was Mahala. Her paternal grandfather was Joseph Pilant. She had four brothers and four sisters, named James, William, John, Joseph, Orlena, Elizabeth, Nancy and Mariah Jane. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.-
