William H. was born in 1865 in ,Hawkins, TN.¹   William H.'s father was John A. Cheatham and his mother was Elizabeth. He had three sisters named Martha A., Minnie and Florence.  He was the second youngest of the four children. He had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named John, James C., Andrew, William, Richard, Elizabeth, Sarah F., Mary E. and Matilda A..
