His paternal grandparents were Drury Ward and Elizabeth Prater; his maternal grandparents were Caleb Shipley and Elizabeth Galloway. He had a brother and two sisters, named William E., Annis Elizabeth and Martha Gilley. He had a half-brother named Thomas Franklin. He died on May 18th, 1927 in Grainger County, Tennessee.-
