Martha Gilley was born on July 23rd, 1867 in Scott County, Virginia. Martha Gilley's father was Simon Peter Ward and her mother was Amanda Elizabeth Shipley. Her paternal grandparents were Drury Ward and Elizabeth Prater; her maternal grandparents were Caleb Shipley and Elizabeth Galloway. She had two brothers and a sister, named William E., Simon Peter and Annis Elizabeth. She had a half-brother named Thomas Franklin. She died at the age of 74 on November 12th, 1941 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.-
