Dempsey was born about 1744 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. Dempsey's father was James Spears and his mother was Elizabeth Coker. His paternal grandparents were James Spears and Ann Doughtie; his maternal grandparents were Caleb Coker and Mary Spier. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Nathaniel Or Nathan, David, Wright, Kindred, Robert, William, Patience Or Terece, Frances and Mary. He died in 1790 in Of Wake Co., NC.-
