Margaret was born in 1801 in , Henry, Virginia. Margaret's father was Ignatius M. Sims and her mother was Jane Or Janet Nance. Her paternal grandparents were Francis Semmes and Lucretia Chapman; her maternal grandparents were John Nance and Mary. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named Marmaduke Nance, Leo Dabney, Ignatius Andrew Jackson, Mary, Jancie, Anna, Eleanor, Exoney, Margaret and Elizabeth. She was the fifth oldest of the eleven children. She had two half-brothers named John Dabney and William Robertson.-
