Henry was born in 1867 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Henry's father was David Rowland and his mother was Phebe A. Vaughan.  His paternal grandparents were Nathan G. Rowland and Mary Parker. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James F., Clarence, William, Robert, Adeline and Amanda.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
