Tabitha was born about 1753 in , , Virginia. Tabitha's father was William Nance and her mother was Ann Eppes. Her paternal grandparents were John Nance and Jane; her maternal grandparents were Llewelyn Eppes and Angelica Bray. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Reuben, Isham, John, Sarah, Mary and Elizabeth. She was the second youngest of the eight children.-
