Mary was born about 1751 in , , Virginia. Mary's father was William Nance and her mother was Ann Eppes. Her paternal grandparents were John Nance and Jane; her maternal grandparents were Llewelyn Eppes and Angelica Bray. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Reuben, Isham, John, Sarah, Tabitha and Elizabeth. She was the third youngest of the eight children.-
