Susannah was born in 1750 in , , Virginia. Susannah's father was Johan David Lauterbach and her mother was Maria Elizabetha Klein. Her paternal grandparents were Johannes Ludwig Lauterbach and Anna Margrethe Gratzmann; her maternal grandparents were Johann Georg Klein and Maria Margrethe Schappert. She had six brothers and five sisters, named David, John, Matthias, Joseph, Daniel, Abraham, Christine, Barbara, Sarah, Eve and Elizabeth. She was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.-
