Daniel was born in 1753 in , , Virginia. Daniel's father was Johan David Lauterbach and his mother was Maria Elizabetha Klein. His paternal grandparents were Johannes Ludwig Lauterbach and Anna Margrethe Gratzmann; his maternal grandparents were Johann Georg Klein and Maria Margrethe Schappert. He had five brothers and six sisters, named David, John, Matthias, Joseph, Abraham, Christine, Susannah, Barbara, Sarah, Eve and Elizabeth. He was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.-
