John L. was born in 1824 in Champaign County, Ohio. John L.'s father was David Louderback and his mother was Susanna L.. His paternal grandparents were Matthias Louderback and Mary Magdalena Brentz. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Benjamin, David, Emanuel, Harry, Martin, Ann, Rebecca and Barbara. He was the second youngest of the nine children.-
