Her paternal grandparents were Philip Heale and Catherine Douglas. She had three brothers and nine sisters, named Nathan Bachman, Philip Smith, William Douglas, Catherine Ann, Eliza Jane, Sarah Amanda, Matilda Antoinette, Mary Bachman, Frances Louisa, Adelaide, Cornelia Josephine and Martha Ellen. She was the third oldest of the thirteen children.-
