Lewis was born in December 1841 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Lewis' father was John Robert Dyer and his mother was Barsheba Thorp.  His paternal grandparents were John Robert Dyer and Sarah Taylor; his maternal grandfather was John Lewis Thorpe. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Augustus W., William T., Richard Fain, Charles Mckinney, John James, Sarah Jane, Mary Or Polly, Louisa Jane, Elizabeth Frances and Nancy Melissa.  He was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 74 on April 14th, 1916.
