Robert L. was born on January 10th, 1851 in , , Tennessee. Robert L.'s father was James Wilkerson Cox and his mother was Cornelia Abbela Hood. His paternal grandparents were James Cox and Sarah Collins. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James Knox Polk, Rufus G., Emmons P. D., Ann, Mary, Sarah P. and Nancy C.. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 34 in 1885 in , Fannin, Texas.-
