Ann was born in 1846 in , , Tennessee. Ann's father was James Wilkerson Cox and her mother was Cornelia Abbela Hood. Her paternal grandparents were James Cox and Sarah Collins. She had four brothers and three sisters, named James Knox Polk, Robert L., Rufus G., Emmons P. D., Mary, Sarah P. and Nancy C.. She was the oldest of the eight children.-
