Thomas was born on January 1st, 1744 in , , North Carolina. Thomas' father was John Amis and his mother was Mary Dillard. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Amis and Rachel Daniel. He had a brother and six sisters, named William, Nancy, Rachel, Rebecca, Frances, Margaret and Mary. He died at the age of 53 in 1797 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.-
