Thomas was born about 1752 in , Brunswick, VA. Thomas' father was James Coker and his mother was Mary Aldridge. His paternal grandparents were John Coker and Priscilla Geddings. He had five brothers and five sisters, named William, Calvin, Robert, Drury, John, Hannah, Mary, Jeanette, Sarah and Ann Amanda. He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
