Drury was born about 1755 in , Laurens, SC. Drury's father was James Coker and his mother was Mary Aldridge. His paternal grandparents were John Coker and Priscilla Geddings. He had five brothers and five sisters, named William, Calvin, Thomas, Robert, John, Hannah, Mary, Jeanette, Sarah and Ann Amanda. He was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.-
