Pharoah was born in 1866 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Pharoah's father was Pharoah A. Cobb and his mother was Catherine Chestnut. His paternal grandfather was Jesse Cobb; his maternal grandparents were Samuel Chestnut and Susan Lee. He had a brother and four sisters, named Jesse, Mary, Diana, Cobb and Sarah Lucy. He was the youngest of the six children.-
