George L.'s father was William Green Clay and his mother was Martha Or Patsy P. Bedford. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Clay and Ann Nancy Winn; his maternal grandparents were Littleberry Bedford and Mattie Clay. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas E., William G., Sidney B., Maria E., Mattie V. and Mattie Virginia.-
