Mahala Jane was born in 1828 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Mahala Jane's father was William Lewis Christian and her mother was Agnes Lewis Bailey. Her paternal grandparents were John Christian and Nancy Skelton; her maternal grandfather was Samuel Bailey. She had three brothers named Stephen H., Eldridge and John F.. She was the second youngest of the four children. She had seven half-brothers and five half-sisters, named William Skelton, Jesse R., Isaac L., M. C., James K., Joseph Frank, David Lyons, Elizabeth, Mary Elizabeth, Nancy, Rachel Matilda and Lillie Belle.-
