John F. was born in 1830 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. John F.'s father was William Lewis Christian and his mother was Agnes Lewis Bailey. His paternal grandparents were John Christian and Nancy Skelton; his maternal grandfather was Samuel Bailey. He had two brothers and a sister, named Stephen H., Eldridge and Mahala Jane. He was the youngest of the four children. He had seven half-brothers and five half-sisters, named William Skelton, Jesse R., Isaac L., M. C., James K., Joseph Frank, David Lyons, Elizabeth, Mary Elizabeth, Nancy, Rachel Matilda and Lillie Belle.-
