Rhoda was born in 1874 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Rhoda's father was Hugh Chestnut and her mother was Hila C. Sanders.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Chestnut and Louisa; her maternal grandparents were John Sanders and Martha. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John S., Charles, Martha Jane and Anna Lynn.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
