Anna Lynn was born in 1869 in , Hawkins, Tennessee.  Anna Lynn's father was Hugh Chestnut and her mother was Hila C. Sanders.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Chestnut and Louisa; her maternal grandparents were John Sanders and Martha. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John S., Charles, Martha Jane and Rhoda.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
