Nancy C. was born about 1841 in , Bourbon, Kentucky.  Nancy C.'s father was Abraham Or Abram Barton and her mother was Catharine Cumbers.  Her paternal grandfather was Joshua Barton. She had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Joshua, Emaline, Susan and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the six children.
