Mary was born about 1851 in , Bourbon, Kentucky.  Mary's father was Abraham Or Abram Barton and her mother was Catharine Cumbers.  Her paternal grandfather was Joshua Barton. She had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Joshua, Emaline, Nancy C. and Susan.  She was the youngest of the six children.
