Ann was born on September 11th, 1768 in , Halifax, North Carolina. Ann's father was William Barrow and her mother was Olivia Ruffin. Her paternal grandfather was William Barrow; her maternal grandparents were Robert Ruffin and Anne Bennett. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Robert, William, Bartholomew, Ruffin, Bennett, Mary and Sarah. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.-
