Minerva was born in 1869 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Minerva's father was Valentine D. Arnott and her mother was Katherine Smith. Her paternal grandparents were Jacob Arnott and Emeline Grigsby. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Andrew, Monk, Nancy, Dulcena, Lucinda, Julia A. and Martha. She was the second youngest of the eight children.-
