Martha was born in 1872 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Martha's father was Valentine D. Arnott and her mother was Katherine Smith. Her paternal grandparents were Jacob Arnott and Emeline Grigsby. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Andrew, Monk, Nancy, Dulcena, Lucinda, Julia A. and Minerva. She was the youngest of the eight children.-
