Elizabeth was born in 1837 in , Bourbon, Kentucky.  Elizabeth's father was Adoniram Allen and her mother was Mary Or Polly Cail.  Her paternal grandfather was Allen; her maternal grandfather was Jacob Cail. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James N., John, Adniram, William, Amanda and Louisa.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
