Martha was born in 1859 in Decatur Co., IA. Martha's father was Thomas Jefferson PHIPPS and her mother was Charlotte COPELAND. Her paternal grandparents were James PHIPPS and UNKNOWN UNKNOWN; her maternal grandparents were Jefferson COPELAND and Louisa JOHNSON . She had four brothers and two sisters, named William S., Joseph Milton , Albert, Leroy, Della and Ida. She was the third oldest of the seven children.-
