James was on the 1820 Limestone County, Alabama Cenus. His 2nd and 3rd
wives were sisters and nieces of his first wife's husband. He first came
to Texas from Tennessee in 1832. He assisted with the removal of the
Chicks aw and Choctaw Indians from the area. He came back to Texas in 1836
and serve d as a Senator in the days of the Republic of Texas. His son
Andrew came with him. In his will he names his six children.
James and Rebecca (?) Titus
The Titus family began its stay in Red River Co. with a land grant in
1837. James Titus, of Tn., worked for the federal government as an Indian
agent during t he relocation of tribes into what is now Ok. and visited
what is now Red Rive r Co. during the early 1830's. The family relocated
here with James, his wife Rebecca, his son Andrew Jackson Titus and his
family which consisted of his wife Jane, a son Ebenezer and a daughter,
Ann Rebecca. While Texas was still a republic, James served in the
seventh and eighth Tex. Congress representing Red River, Bowie, Lamar and
Fannin counties. James died on Sept. 11, 1843, and is buried in Savannah
Cemetery. Upon his death, his son, Andrew Jackson T itus, worked to help
gain statehood for Texas, even traveling to Washington, D.C., in his
efforts. When Texas became a state, he was honored by having a s ection of
the original Red River Co. named for him. In later years he served in the
Tex. Legislature. He died on April 9, 1855, at the age of 41 and is al so
buried in Savannah Cemetery. Before the death of Andrew Jackson in 1855,
a third child, James Fearin (Tobe) Titus was born on Jan. 21,1853. Tobe
was a young boy during the Civil War, while his brother Ebenezer served
as an of ficer with the 27th Texas Cavalry. Times were tough during the
reconstructio n years following the war. Most of the Titus family's land
and wealth was gon e and Tobe farmed what was left of the original grant.
In 1873, Tobe married Margaret Hogland. Their eldest child was Charley
Jackson Titus, born on July 14,1874. Two daughters, Janie and Sally, were
also born to Margaret before sh e died prematurely in 1878. Tobe then
married Tenny Burkhan, who bore him two children, Ebb and Lou. Tobe died
on Oct. 2,1904, and rests in Savannah. My grandfather, Charley Jackson
Titus, married Georgia Mae Mace in 1904. They ra ised ten children: Clara,
Amos, Morris, Ollie, "Cotton", Deward, Maggie, Ger aldine, Charlsie and
C.J. Charley Jackson farmed his ancestor's land and pass ed away on
Mar. 3, 1935. My father, Ollie Purtle Titus, was born on Jan. 9, 1 910.
On Sept. 29, 1933, he married the former Lessie Velma Jackson. They have
four surviving children: Cloyce Dean, Clara Beth, Kay Jean and Ollie
Lynn. Their first child, our sister Georgia Ann, died in infancy. Cloyce
is marri ed to the former Theresa Jo Garner. They have two children, Bryon
and Shelley . Clara is married to Paxton Driggers. Their children are
Mark, Duane, Dana a nd Chris. Kay Jean is married to Mackey Barnes and has
a daughter, Connie, an d a son, Paul. Lynn is married to the former
Rosemary Vincell. They have two children, James Andrew and Rebecca
Elizabeth. Of this direct line of Titus D escendents, Ollie and Lessie
have resided in New Boston since 1948. Cloyce li ves in Lewisville and is
part owner of several large manufacturing firms. Cla ra Beth lives in
Duncanville, Kay Jean in Eros, La., and Lynn in Grand
