Robert was born in 1788.1   Robert's father was Thomas Edmiston and his mother was Martha Buchanan.  His paternal grandparents were William Edmiston and Agnes Holmes; his maternal grandparents were Robert Buchanan and Mary ?. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named William, Samuel, John Black, Martha, Nancy, Elizabeth, Esther, Rachael, Louisa and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the eleven children.
