Hugh de Audley Earl of Gloucester 
Hugh de Audley was born about 1289.1 Hugh de Audley's father was Hugh de Audley Baron Audley and his mother was Isolde (Iseude) de Mortimer. His paternal grandparents were James Justicular of Ireland de Audley and Ela Longespée; his maternal grandparents were Roger de Mortimer Baron Wigmore and Maud de Braose. He was an only child. He died on November 10th, 1347. He was buried in 1st Earl of Gloucester (by right of his wife). Acceded:16 Mar 1336/7..1 1 General Notes

1965,concerning the partition of the de C LARE estates after the death of
the last Gilbert, p 170-171: ----Hugh d'Audle y and Margaret [Gilbert's
sister] obtained the honor of Tonbridge and manors in Surrey, various
estates appurtenant to the honors of Gloucester and Clare in Northampton,
Huntingdon, Wiltshire, Norfolk, and Southampton, and the moan or and town
of Thornbury in Gloucestershire. D'Audley also received the lord ship of
Gwynllwg, hitherto dependent on Glamorgan, which was now organized as a
fully separate county. In addition, each heir acquired two-ninths of
t he liberty of Kilkenny in Ireland, although there is no evidence that
any of them every visited it. (P) The death of the countess in the
summer of 1320 c ompleted the division of the estates among th heirs. Maud
probably died on Ju ly 2, and the properties she held in dower must have
been partitioned shortly thereafter. Each received an equal portion of
her third of Kilkenny. D'Audl ey received properties in Wiltshire which
had originally formed part of the M arshal estates, along with manors and
boroughs of the honor of Clare in Suffo lk, Norfolk, Surrey and Kent. The
partition of the Clare estates has been de scribed as "the most important
territorial upheaval of the reign." [Denham-Yo ung *Vita Edwardi Secundi,
pp xii-xiii*]"
