Narrative

John Phillips was in the U.S. Navy during World War II (1942-1945) and
served in the Pacific Theater. He was aboard a Navy tugboat. A Navy
tugboat is not your civilian model tugboat, but a boat that could go out
to sea and bring back to port the warships that were damaged and could
not get back under their own power.
He graduated from the South Texas College of Law, Houston, Texas in 1942,
but did not take the bar exam until 1946, after the war. He was
Valedictorian of the class.
He served as county attorney and was in private practice for many years.
During some of this time he also taught business law and real estate
classes at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. I took all
of his courses and almost everyone from Giddings that went to Sam did
too, and of course if he would ask them if they knew my mother and
father, it would seem that they were all the best of friends with them.
He really did like teaching and seemed to like kids from Giddings.
