! Leo Hartman was inducted in the United States Army on November
11, 1918, the same day armistice was signed. He received a discharge
the same day and was paid one dollar for his services. He went to
Three Rivers, Texas on February 22, 1920 to take the depot agents job
for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. He received this employment on
completion of telegraphy trade school in Tyler, Texas. He said if he
had had ten dollars in his pocket he would not have gotten off the
train after he saw the town. He met Pauline Byrne of Tilden,
Texas while she was teaching school in Calliham, a town about eleven
miles west of Three Rivers. They were married May 27th. 1925 in
Tilden, Texas. The priest performing the ceremony was Father Michael
Puig from Refugio. Attending their wedding was Victor Hartman, Leo's
brother and Joe Becker, both from Muenster, Texas. Leo served as
Freight Agent, Railway Express Agent, and Wester Union Telegrapher for
over forty seven years. He was a leader in the community serving as
president of the school board for over 20 years and was instrumental
in placing the school on a paying basis. He retired from the railroad
in September of 1967, the same month Hurricane Buellah hit south
Texas. Their home had over four feet of water in it for five days and
all their possessions were lost. Leo and Pauline moved to George
West, Texas after that. Leo brought to south Texas the nickname
of "Tommy", from an incident of a horse standing on his foot when he
was quite young. That name stayed with him all his life. Pauline died
in a rest home in Beeville, Texas on May 4, 1974. Leo died at home in
George West, December 20, 1983 at the age of 86 years. They were
buried in the St. George cemetery in George West but were moved to the
Three Rivers Cemetery in Three Rivers in 1985.
