Narrative

[byrne.ftw]
! At 9:00 A.M. on the morning of January 4, 1927, Victor Hartman
and Margaret Bayer were married in the Sacred Heart Church in
Muenster, by the Rev. Father Frowin. Their attendants were, Frank
Bayer, best man and Frances Hartman, maid of honor. A reception and
dance were held in the Parish Hall. After the dance, Frank Bayer took
his date, Romania Walter and the newly weds, and started for home.
They were driving a 1925 Model "T" sedan belonging to John Schilling.
After dropping his date off at her house they proceeded on to the
Bayer home, but they were still miles from Margaret's house when they
ran out of gas. The best man got out and walked to Ed Schmitt Sr.
home to get some gas, leaving the newly weds alone for a few minutes.
This was the only time they were alone as they spent their wedding
night with the bride's parents. The young couple had planned a
honeymoon, but the bride's mother asked them not to go because she was
afraid the highways would be too crowded. Their life began on a farm
approximately six miles north of Muenster, that belonged to Tony
Trubenbach Sr. They lived there for the first two years of their
marriage. Victor and Margaret's early days were filled with the usual
busy chores on a farm. When they found out they were soon to be
blessed with a little one, Victor decided to build a high-bed. He and
Margaret went out and gathered wood for the project from a fence that
was no longer needed. Since it was too cold to build it outside,
Victor worked on it diligently each evening by the stove in the
kitchen. When it was finished, both he and Margaret were thrilled
with the results. Then Margaret decided which room she wanted to put
the high-bed in, but when they tried to move it out of the kitchen, it
was too big to get through the door, so they left it in the kitchen
next to the warmth of the stove, and Margaret enjoyed the convenience
of a nursery centrally located.
